Five Boroughs Active Transportation Plan

Rankin, Braddock, North Braddock, East Pittsburgh, & Turtle Creek, PA

Nestled along the Monongahela River, south of the City of Pittsburgh, the “Five Boroughs” desired to complete an Active Transportation Plan to increase available opportunities for their residents to safely participate in healthy activities such as walking and cycling and so enhance community vitality, sustainability and livability.

Like many boroughs in the Pittsburgh area, these five are challenged geographically and industrially with separation from each other and the townships around them. The major roads are full of traffic and dangerous. The boroughs hope an implementable plan will provide safety for pedestrians and cyclists, encouraging a more healthy lifestyle for their residents.

With these challenges in mind, a step-by-step plan to provide the “Six E’s” of Active Transportation: Education, Enforcement, Encouragement, Evaluation and Planning, Equity and Engineering was produced to guide the boroughs in their endeavor.
