The purpose of the Wintergreen Gorge Sustainability Master Plan is to inventory, analyze, evaluate, and provide implementation strategies to manage the gorge for conservation, recreation, and environmental education purposes. A key component of the plan was to understand how natural systems affects conservation and trail development. The plan addresses:
- Stewardship and land protection, including conservation of rare species; avian, terrestrial and aquatic life habitat support; and protection of fragile terrain.
- Stream stabilization and restoration, including upstream stormwater management.
- Trail master plan, including transforming an existing informal trail network, which was often in conflict with conservation of natural systems, into a sustainable trail system
Pashek + MTR assisted the University in applying for and securing over $500,000 in funding for implementation of sustainable trail and trailhead improvements that were proposed in the master plan. Further, through SeaGrant Pennsylvania, a Weed Warrior program has been established by student volunteers to assist with eradication of invasive species within the gorge.
